Monarch Airlines has selected BSI as its provider of verification services against the requirements of the EU ETS directive. This comes in response to the industry's requirement to monitor its CO2 emissions and demonstrate compliance with the directive by submitting a verified annual emissions report by 31 March every year from 2011 onwards.
The EU ETS is a major part of the European Union's climate policy and is the largest multi-country, multi-sector Greenhouse Gas Emission Trading System in the world. The aviation industry was officially included within the EU ETS from January 2010 and the scheme will affect over 3,000 commercial and non-commercial airlines.
Monarch currently operates a fleet of 30 aircraft, serving over 100 destinations worldwide. Services are split between scheduled and charter flights, with the airline carrying almost 7 million passengers per year. Monarch is the oldest airline in the UK still operating under its original brand name, and will this year enter its 42nd year of flying.
In choosing BSI, Monarch's Director of External and Industry Affairs, Mike Smith, commented, "We were looking for a professional verification partner that could demonstrate expertise within the Greenhouse Gas arena, and quickly immerse themselves within the culture of the aviation industry while adding value to our verification process."
Andrew Morris, Director of Business Development at BSI said, "We are delighted to be partnering one of the UK's leading airlines to assist them with compliance to this new regulation and we congratulate them in their early adoption of the legislation. BSI has been involved in the EU ETS since the scheme's inception in 2005, so has built a wealth of experience to help it deliver an appropriate verification service to the aviation industry."

Until now, there has been no strict guidance in the UK relating to how audiovisual (AV) installations are carried out. This includes everything from computers and projectors to interactive whiteboards, plasma screens and loud speakers. For AV installation companies, processes can vary significantly.

A little bit extra for Kitemark® bodyshops and garages
It's all well and good for an automotive bodyshop to earn the Thatcham BSI Kitemark® for Vehicle Body Repair, but it won't have as much impact if potential clients don't know about it. As a consequence, BSI decided to offer an Extras marketing toolkit to bodyshops and garages that have earned the Kitemark.
Sapphire earns a standards hat-trick
Sapphire Energy Recovery, the waste processing and resource recovery business owned by Lafarge Cement, has achieved certification to three management systems standards (ISO 9001 Quality management, ISO 14001 Environmental management and BS OHSAS 18001 Health and safety management) from BSI. Sapphire is the UK's leading processor of used tyres, and sources and manages the logistics of a range of waste-derived fuels and raw materials for the cement industry.
As part of its evolving governance, risk and compliance strategy, BSI has acquired the Supply Chain Security Division of First Advantage Corporation.
Question: Does business really need an integrated management systems standard?
Integrate or disintegrate - which would you choose? Some ten years ago the environmental standard, ISO 14001, was born and there are now over 100,000 organizations registered to it worldwide.
