Vodafone: In good voice

11 Sep 2009
Topics: BS 25999, Business continuity, Telecoms

Vodafone UK has achieved certification to BS 25999 Business continuity management for its 3G voice and mobile broadband service, reflecting its reliable business continuity management (BCM) system. Vodafone UK is the first mobile network operator to achieve certification to BS 25999 and the only operator globally to have both 2G and 3G networks certified. And with 19 million customers demanding consistent, reliable service, continuity is key.

Continued operations in the event of a business disruption, whether due to a major disaster or a minor incident, are a fundamental requirement for any organization. Through the implementation of a business continuity management system (BCMS), BS 25999provides a basis for understanding, developing, implementing and managing business continuity within an organization.

"More customers are asking for evidence of their partners' business continuity credentials. Vodafone UK's BS 25999 certification sends a clear signal that we are going the extra mile to support our customers' needs," explains Peter Kelly, enterprise director of Vodafone UK.

By gaining the standard for its 3G and 2G networks, Vodafone UK is further supporting its role as an essential service provider in the event that a state of emergency is declared by the authorities, in accordance with the Civil Contingencies Act.

Clear thinking for consortia

While there was a time when companies would never consider working alongside the competition, today's marketplace demands a more flexible approach. Collaboration is fast becoming par for the course. For example, large government contracts often require expertise that goes far beyond any one company's capacity to deliver. Forming a consortium brings together the right experience in the right place, and it can mean the difference between winning or losing a tender.

Question: Are health and safety issues at risk of being lost in the current financial turmoil?

When business isn't going well - whether it's due to a recession or simply because a company is going through a slow patch - there is a temptation to cut costs by cutting corners. Instead of treating an issue like product and consumer safety as vital to a organization's growth and reputation, it can become just another expense or regulatory requirement.
