30 Jan 2009
Topics: Food safety, ISO 22000

As our food supply stems from ever increasing numbers of organizations and individuals around the world, there is a need for secure management along the whole of the supply chain. A new standard, PAS 220:2008 Prerequisite programmes on food safety for food manufacturing, has been developed to help control food safety risks within the manufacturing processes of international food supply chains. It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 22000 Food safety management systems. Requirements for any organization in the food chain which states that an organization should establish prerequisite programmes to assist in controlling food safety hazards.

The development of the PAS was sponsored by Danone, Kraft, Nestlé and Unilever through the Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the European Union (CIAA). PAS 220 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing and maintaining prerequisite programmes (PRP) to assist in controlling food safety hazards. It applies to all organizations that are involved in the manufacturing step of the food chain and wish to implement PRP to address the requirements specified in ISO 22000.
