It's a familiar scenario in the news: a piece of evidence is introduced to prosecute a defendant in a courtroom and if any doubt is introduced about the integrity of that evidence, the strength of that evidence can be limited if not eliminated, potentially harming a legal case. In an age when digital evidence is taking centre stage in more and more legal cases, an agreed system to confirm the authenticity and integrity of electronic information under such circumstances has taken on ever-greater importance.
In response to this demand, BSI has published BS 10008 Evidential weight and legal admissibility of electronic information, which was created to deal with issues relating to the authenticity and integrity of such information. BS 10008 ensures that any electronic information required as evidence of a business transaction is afforded the maximum evidential weight. The process is based on the specification of requirements for planning, implementing, operating, monitoring and improving an organization's information management systems.
The scope covers the accessibility and availability of verifiable information over a period of time, and includes the use of document management, storage, transmission, and retrieval systems as well as electronic identification/signatures and copyright management.

World Standards Day 2008 was on 14 October and this year, the theme was "Intelligent and Sustainable Buildings". The day highlighted the role of standards in everything from safety requirements to new technologies in the design and construction of such buildings.
