Direct action on sustainability

28 Jan 2008
Topics: Environment

BSI held a direct marketing industry stakeholder workshop to discuss the feasibility of developing a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) for reducing the environmental impacts of direct marketing.

The industry stakeholder event was an initial step in BSI British Standards' plan to develop a standard for the industry, the development of which has been made possible through sponsorship by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and its partners: Acxiom; ISBA, the representative body for client companies on all aspects of marketing communications; Royal Mail; and the Telephone Preference Service.

The standard (PAS 2020) will be independently facilitated by BSI and is expected to take nine to 12 months to develop. It will complement the DMA's drive to raise standards in the direct marketing industry through its promotion of best-practice guidelines and self-regulation.

Over 20 stakeholders were represented at the workshop. Participants contributed feedback that supported the development of an unambiguous, certifiable PAS that should contain a realistic set of performance requirements for the industry as well as guidance on how to achieve these requirements. It was hoped that the standard could work alongside existing environmental management systems such as ISO 14001.
