New consumer products standard in china

23 Jul 2007
Topics: BRC, China

BSI Management Systems took part in the recent British Retail Consortium (BRC) launch of its new BRC Global Standard - Consumer Products in Guangzhou, China, in April 2007.

BSI is an approved BRC certification body and an accredited provider of certification to existing BRC Food and Packaging standards. BSI is part of the UKAS pilot accreditation programme for the new standard. The standard has already been introduced in the supply chains of leading retailers including Tesco, Metro (Germany's largest retailer), Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Co-op, and others.

The BRC event offered consumer goods suppliers the opportunity to understand retailers' obligations to supply safe and legal products to their consumers, and the requirements that manufacturing and assembly packing companies need to demonstrate in maintaining product safety, legality and integrity on an international scale. The revised and updated BRC Global Standard - Consumer Products (Issue 2) covers all non-food products, which come under EU general product safety regulations and include cosmetics, toiletries, electrical items, white goods and toys.

The launch of the Chinese version of the standard was held at the Asia International Hotel during the Canton Fair, the largest trade fair in China. Delegates learned about the standard and the benefits of independent certification. BSI had an exhibition booth at the event and experts on hand to answer questions.

Clear thinking for consortia

While there was a time when companies would never consider working alongside the competition, today's marketplace demands a more flexible approach. Collaboration is fast becoming par for the course. For example, large government contracts often require expertise that goes far beyond any one company's capacity to deliver. Forming a consortium brings together the right experience in the right place, and it can mean the difference between winning or losing a tender.
