Absolute Software, the Vancouver-based provider of computer theft recovery, data protection and secure IT asset management solutions has achieved certification to ISO/IEC 27001 Information security management for its production of IT operations for customers.
Absolute Software offers organizations and consumers solutions in the areas of regulatory compliance, data protection and theft recovery. Working in such an environment, stringent IT management is a core competence and essential for customer confidence.
As such, a comprehensive information security policy is at the heart of the business. ISO/IEC 27001 provides a framework for an effective information security management system (ISMS) to support such a policy.
"As a provider of computer management and anti-theft solutions that are delivered as service (SaaS), this certification is an important demonstration of our commitment to the highest standards of internal security," explains John Livingston, chairman and CEO of Absolute. "Not only does the certification recognize our high security standards, but it lets our customers, partners and prospects know that we take the protection of their data extremely seriously."
"Our ISMS gives us a structure to follow in our technical operations, with all the benefits of consistency and predictability that come with best-practices. In addition, the confidence that the certification gives our prospective customers and partners enables us to move quickly through technical questions that may arise during the sales cycle or when making a business alliance,? points out Gareth Mason, vice-president of Service Delivery at Absolute Software.
The standard covers 10 detailed control categories including: information security policy, security organization, asset classification controls, personnel security, physical security, communication management, access controls, system deployment, continuity planning and compliance.
Absolute Software's certification to ISO/IEC 27001 followed audits conducted by BSI Group and recognizes the company's implementation of an effective ISMS that complies with one of the most stringent international standards.

A clear case for carbon neutrality
"Carbon neutral" sounds good on paper, but what does it really mean? Organizations are making claims about carbon neutrality for everything from products to travel, events, projects and buildings. The problem is that no one quite agrees what "carbon neutral" means or how far it extends.
Security is a challenge at the best of times for a retail bank. If you offer services via the internet, security becomes even more complicated. For Barclays UK Retail Online Banking, information security is at the core of their business, which is one of the main reasons the organization pursued and achieved certification to ISO/IEC 27001 Information security from BSI.
OCS, an international facilities services group based in the UK, has achieved triple certification to ISO 9001 Quality management, ISO 14001 Environmental management/ and BS OHSAS 18001 Health and safety management with BSI.
Sustainability: more than "green"
Sustainable development means taking into account the social, economic and environmental impacts of business activities, not only for the present but also for future generations.
Question: Given the state of the environment, should issues like energy management in business be more regulated and closely monitored instead of voluntary?
Climate change is such an urgent issue that some might argue the only answer to this question is "Yes". However, creating laws that achieve their goals in precisely the right way is challenging and time consuming at the best of times. And when it comes to climate change, the factors involved are varied - too many for any one law or set of laws to cover adequately.
