The Spanish arm of Office Depot, one of the largest office retail chains in the world, has become the first company in Spain to obtain certification to the updated ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System standard, and the first company globally to be audited and certified by BSI to the updated standard.
The scope of registration is comprehensive and includes stock; provision and distribution of office material, printing and computer products; fleet management; and administrative support and central office functions. The latter functions include planning and strategy, operations and maintaining the management system, as well as supporting and assessment functions in different locations.
Certification to the updated ISO 9001:2008 is particularly important because it focuses on processes and confirms that Office Depot in Spain is committed to continuous improvement, in line with the "Plan-Do-Check-Act" (PDCA) cycle.
"This has been an opportunity, a challenge and an effort for us," says Carolina Lopez, quality manager with Office Depot in Spain. "It's an opportunity because this has allowed us to review our commitment to quality, and our handbook to our process and client's requirements. This process review is always a challenge because of the improvement and changing aims, and every worker's effort is here and every manager for making it true."
Marcio Viegas, BSI Spain country manager adds, "Certification has been possible thanks to Office Depot's attitude and speed in improving its system based on the draft standard. We completed an initial assessment in September using the draft standard, and when the new standard was published last month and we received confirmation that the content was the same as the draft, we were able to issue the certificate without delay."

Question: Why is risk management important to business?
First, there's more to risk management than just managing risk. Most organizations will talk about risk assessments, but the question is: what are they assessing? If you don't know what the threats are, then how can you conduct an effective risk assessment?
