All systems go at NYK Logistics

NYK Logistics has earned certification to ISO 9001 across 15 sites

NYK Logistics (UK) Ltd, which offers integrated global supply chain services and facilities, has achieved certification to ISO 9001 Quality management systems at 15 of its sites and ISO 14001 Environmental management systems at a further six, with the support of BSI Management Systems. And it has done so in very fast order.

It's impressive, but NYK Logistics is accustomed to coping with complex situations and demanding schedules at a global level: its network covers 110 large-scale storage, consolidation and distribution centres around the world. Its clients cover all sectors, from retail to consumer electronics, grocery, apparel, automotive and pharmaceuticals.

"It would have been commendable for any organization to achieve any of the standards in this time frame, but to be certified to both Quality and Environmental standards and across so many sites is extraordinary," says Rob Wallis, UK managing director of BSI Management Systems. This is part of the company's long-term plans to achieve certification to ISO 9001 across all sites, and certification of specific sites to ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001.

"These accolades are particularly powerful in a world of rising energy costs and fierce competition in the logistics industry," says Darral Beresford, NYK's group quality and environmental manager. "We are particularly proud to be one of the few businesses in our sector to have gained certification to ISO 14001 Environmental management systems across such a wide number of sites.

"Our objective was to introduce a standard approach and discipline to our working practice which would enable the organization to work towards continual improvement. These standards demonstrate to all our stakeholders and customers our proactive approach in the adoption of best practice for quality, environment and health and safety."
