Engineering industry first in Japan

Japan's leading engineering and construction firm, Chiyoda Corporation, has been certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2005 Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) by BSI Management Systems Japan. This is the first company in Japan's engineering industry to acquire companywide certification.

Chiyoda Corporation, headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, provides services in the field of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for gas processing, oil refineries and other hydrocarbon processing and industrial plant projects, particularly in Gas Value Chain areas, on a global basis including the Middle East, Russia, Africa and South East Asian regions.

Chiyoda has handled engineering, procurement and construction projects for various plants and facilities in Japan and overseas for a number of years. During that time, Chiyoda has built a stock of management and technical information, as well as the privileged data of clients, licensors and other business partners. It was essential to secure and protect this data, in order to ensure the smooth execution of Chiyoda's various projects. With its stated aim to be the "Reliability No 1" company, Chiyoda determined the need for objective confirmation of its ongoing efforts to establish and enhance information security in all areas of operation.

This was a natural step for the company, having already constructed an ISMS framework that conformed with BS 7799 - the precursor to ISO/IEC 27001 - in 2001, and then creating an ISO/IEC 27001-compliant framework in 2007, to maintain and improve information security.

The certification covers all head office operations from engineering, including R&D, to project management, procurement and related operations, and administration.

With this certification as an objective evaluation of its information security, Chiyoda expects client and stakeholder trust will increase and its ability to compete for contracts and execute projects will further improve.

Chiyoda will establish and entrench an information security management culture that involves all employees by promoting the spread of ISMS throughout the company, enhancing information security education, and with other initiatives. At the same time, the company will strengthen its ISMS by maintaining certification and undergoing renewal inspections, thus further increasing trust in its information security.
